OPEN CALL: Fooooood and What's In Between

An Annual Project by 422 Arts (2022-2023)

422 Arts is calling artists/researchers/creative practitioners who are interested in the social and environmental aspects of the food we consume to submit proposals for Fooooood and What's In Between until 16/10/22.

About the project

Food plays a vital role in the work of 422 Community Centre and its efforts to promote nutritional security in our neighbourhood and beyond. It is unquestionably crucial for our existence, but food is also so much more than the physical fuel that keeps us going–it is a great part of our culture and our heritage which often operates as a bond that brings people together.

Unfortunately, food is also at the core of some of the most prominent environmental and socio-political crises of our time ranging from climate change to Covid induced shortages, and to the current war in Ukraine, which severely paralysed the world’s wheat supply chain and created collateral damage in the form of hunger and food shortages across the Global South.

We are inviting proposals in the maximum sum of £1800 for talks, creative projects, workshops and events relating to any of the aspects mentioned above. Selected submissions will take place at 422 Centre or online throughout 2022-2023 and may include the usage of our professional kitchen and cafe facilities.

We are interested in proposals relating (but not limited) to:

Food and climate change

Nutritional Security

Self-sufficiency and reducing food waste

Food politics

Food and social change

Food and storytelling

Food and heritage/history (especially in relation to Manchester or the local communities of Longsight and Ardwick)
